Munich Re Specialty, the specialist insurance division of global insurance and reinsurance provider Munich Re Group, has officially launched its primary specialty insurance operations in Australia, offering coverage across property, construction and engineering, mining, and surety.
The company said the move marks a further stage in its international expansion strategy, with the Australian operation designed to provide locally managed insurance services to commercial businesses and mid-sized organisations.
According to Munich Re Specialty, establishing a direct presence in the market will enable its underwriting and claims teams to work more closely with brokers and policyholders. The expansion also supports Munich Re Group’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which sets out the group’s longer-term business objectives.
Munich Re Specialty explained that its initial Australian portfolio will concentrate on four specialist insurance classes, while drawing on additional products available through its Lloyd’s syndicate and the wider Munich Re Group network.
The insurer also intends to maintain and develop relationships with its existing managing general agent (MGA) partners in Australia as part of its approach to distribution and market development.
The Australian business will operate under the leadership of Chris Mackinnon, who has been appointed Head of Munich Re Specialty in Australia. His responsibilities will include overseeing commercial development, managing relationships with insurance intermediaries and clients, and guiding the company’s growth in the market.
Munich Re Specialty noted that Mackinnon brings considerable experience in the Australian and international insurance industries. He was recently recognised by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mackinnon commented: “Today is the culmination of purposeful strategic planning to bring the best of Munich Re Specialty to the Australian insurance market. Munich Re’s global financial strength, stability and technical prowess provides a powerful competitive advantage and a basis as a long-term partner for risk management.
“Complemented by my team of experienced underwriters and claims professionals, we will provide local authority with an easy to access, consistent and responsive approach. We have built client needs into our planning from the outset and for that reason, I have every confidence the market will appreciate our offering.”
Sydney will serve as the headquarters for the new operation, allowing Munich Re Specialty to establish its business alongside Munich Re’s existing corporate insurance and reinsurance activities in the city.
The insurer said it expects to increase its Australian underwriting resources, claims expertise and distribution capacity as the business develops. Its entry into the market also extends Munich Re Specialty’s geographical footprint, complementing its operations in Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai.
Mackinnon’s appointment follows an established career within the Lloyd’s insurance market. He previously held the position of Lloyd’s General Representative in Australia for nine years before taking up a regional leadership role in Singapore in 2024, covering Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
His industry background also includes board positions with the Insurance Council of Australia and the Underwriting Agencies Council, together with involvement in the New South Wales Divisional Committee of the National Insurance Brokers Association.
Munich Re Specialty has also assembled a local management team to oversee key operational functions. Chris Harnett will lead underwriting activities, while Angus Kench will manage commercial claims. Alison Percival has been appointed to oversee partnerships and support the company’s relationships across the Australian insurance sector.
The company indicated that the new leadership structure and its planned investment in local capabilities will underpin the development of its Australian operations as it establishes its position in the primary specialty insurance market.
