Sompo adds MacHale as CUO & Head of Strategy, International Markets

Sompo, a global provider of commercial and consumer property, casualty and specialty reinsurance, has appointed Henry MacHale as chief underwriting officer (CUO) and head of strategy for its insurance business in international markets.

He will be based in London and report to Sompo International Markets CEO Alessa Quane.

In his new role, McHale will work closely with the reinsurer’s regional underwriting leaders and teams to improve underwriting performance, develop global underwriting policies and implement pricing and underwriting risk control frameworks.

Additionally, he will work with regional CEOs to develop and develop international market strategies with a focus on organic and inorganic growth opportunities.

McHale will collaborate and drive connectivity and coordination within the business, maintaining the advantage of local expertise and decision-making. Most recently, he served as Chief Strategy Officer of Aspen Group,

Sompo’s international market covers 22 countries in four regions: United Kingdom (UK), Asia Pacific (APAC), Continental Europe (including Turkey) and Brazil.

Commenting on the appointment, Ms Quane said: “Henry’s appointment is an important step for our business in international markets.

“He has a strong track record of underwriting specialty products and brings strategic leadership and deep industry experience that will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen underwriting performance, strengthen governance and risk controls, and strengthen the focus of our strategy across geographies.
