Lemonade partners with Tesla to launch autonomous car insurance

Lemonade, an AI-powered digital insurance company, has launched Lemonade Self-Driving Car Insurance, a product designed specifically for autonomous vehicles, starting with Tesla FSD.

The new product, described as the first of its kind, reduces the per-mile rate for FSD driving by approximately 50%, a reduction that represents a significant reduction in risk during autonomous driving.

Lemonade expects rates to drop further as Tesla rolls out FSD software updates, which it expects will improve vehicle safety over time.

The launch is the result of a technical collaboration with Tesla, which provides Lemonade with access to previously unavailable vehicle data.

The captured data then informs Lemonade’s usage-based risk prediction models, allowing them to uniquely differentiate between human and autonomous driving and predict risk based on factors such as the car’s autonomous software version and sensor accuracy.

“Traditional insurance companies treat Teslas like any other car and treat AI like any other driver,” said Lemonade co-founder and president Shai Wininger. “But a car that can see 360 degrees, never fall asleep, and can react in milliseconds is no match for a human.”

“Our existing pay-per-mile product gives us something traditional insurance companies don’t: a unique technology stack designed to collect large amounts of real-world driving data for precise, dynamic pricing. Lemonade self-driving cars are built on this foundation,” Wininger said.

Lemonade’s policy covers households with intermittent FSD use as well as other non-FSD vehicles from Tesla and other manufacturers.

The company noted that customers can receive further discounts on safe driving through bundling with Lemonade’s homeowners, renters and pet insurance.

This approach is in line with Lemonade’s strategy of using artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and accurate pricing, creating cost savings for customers. Lemonade self-driving car insurance is a step toward its goal of becoming the lowest-cost, best-experience insurance company in the world.

“Teslas driven with FSD have far fewer accidents,” Wininger added. “By connecting to Tesla’s on-board computer, our models are able to capture extremely granular sensor data, allowing us to price insurance more accurately than ever before.”

“In addition to today’s announcement, we are also announcing a commitment to the Tesla community – the more secure the FSD software is, the more our prices will come down,” Wininger said.

The product will begin rolling out in Arizona on January 26 and in Oregon a month later.
