Netflix has confirmed that its original political thriller The Diplomat will be returning to our screens.
On Thursday afternoon, the streaming giant announced that The Diplomat would be getting a fifth season, following the huge popularity of the fourth, which dropped two weeks ago.
The news comes after fans were left hanging at the end of season four, when Keri Russell’s character took a stand against the show’s fictitious US president, played by Allison Janney.
Deborah Cahn, the show’s creator, said of this ending: “It is very important in terms of what we’re looking at, [to consider] what you can do as a group that you can’t do as an individual, or what will make a difference as a group that won’t make a difference as an individual.
“Moral contagion works in both directions.”
The newest season explored conflict on both a personal and global level, with Keri and Allison joined once again by their on-screen husbands Rufus Sewell and Bradley Whitford, the latter of whom previously shared the screen with the Oscar winner in The West Wing.
Netflix has said that further details about The Diplomat’s fifth season “will be shared at a later time”.
Since it debuted in 2023, The Diplomat has become one of Netflix’s most popular original series of the 2020s, with both critics and viewers.
The show has released one new season a year since it launched, in which time it’s also been recognised by the Baftas, Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes and Emmys, with Allison Janney winning an award for her performance in season three at the latter.
Per a Netflix press release: “Across all four seasons, The Diplomat has been in the Top 10 for 13 weeks, reaching the Top 10 in 87 countries, and earning over 130 million views since its debut.”
The first four seasons of The Diplomat are all available to stream now on Netflix.
