Slow Horses director Adam Randall has spoken about the dramatic season six finale cliffhanger that had fans the world over letting out a collective gasp.
Last week, the sixth run of the popular Apple TV+ spy drama came to an end, with a final episode that concluded with the life of Jack Lowden’s character hanging in the balance, after he’d seemingly been poisoned.
With no resolution to the storyline, viewers were left to ponder whether Jack would be back in season seven, especially after a teaser for the next run of episodes that indicated his character may have been killed.
During a new interview with Variety, Adam disclosed that there were actually two possible endings for season six, one of which would have been “happy” and “really lovely”.
“Had it been the end of the series, it would have been just a magical end for River’s journey,” he explained. “It was almost like Spielberg-ian, the happy version of it.”
“And we played with that for a while, but we knew, from the book and the next story to tell in season seven, that we needed the other version of it.”
“It’s difficult because it’s such a dark season and there’s so much death and tragedy in it then to end in such a dark way,” he continued. “I just was like, ‘I hope we don’t lose everybody, really’.”
While the ending was intended as an open-ended cliffhanger, many viewers voiced that it may have already been resolved, when Jack and his co-star Olivia Cooke were caught on camera shooting season eight in London.
Asked about this, Adam admitted: “It’s difficult to [talk about], isn’t it, because it’s supposed to be [a cliffhanger] – it’s frustrating.
“I mean, I was there shooting [last week], it was in Walthamstow [in north east London], and we’re out everywhere shooting. I was amazed no one saw Olivia when we were shooting season six, but we got away with that.
“But this one is much more public. We’re really out and about, and we’re about to go even wider out in London, so there’ll be a lot more spottings of Jack. So I don’t think we can keep that secret.”
Meanwhile, questions over Jack’s Slow Horses future come at a time he’s also widely tipped to be in the running to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig, with his final screen test reported to have taken place over the weekend.
