Marsh Risk and Apollo launch Insurance Facility to support Uber’s autonomous vehicle expansion

Marsh Risk, a unit of global insurance broker and risk advisor Marsh, and specialty insurer Apollo, a unit of Skyward Specialty Insurance Group, have announced the launch of a new insurance facility developed for Uber Technologies Inc.

The arrangement is designed to support the expansion of self-driving vehicles operating through Uber’s global platform.

The new facility is centered around the Autonomous Vehicle Insurance Program (AVIP), a tailor-made insurance solution designed to support companies working within Uber’s autonomous vehicle ecosystem.

These include technology developers, fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers and owners, as well as original equipment manufacturers involved in the development and operation of autonomous ride-hailing and delivery services.

The program is part of Uber’s broader Uber Autonomous Solutions program, which is designed to help partners introduce and expand autonomous services in different markets.

AVIP is underwritten by Apollo’s ibott division, providing specialized insurance capabilities to Uber’s self-driving vehicle partners. The program offers primary liability and excess liability coverage, with pricing reflecting each partner’s safety performance.

This facility combines insurance protection from multiple parties under a single master policy. By bringing insurance coverage together in this way, the program aims to reduce administrative complexity and provide a more streamlined approach to insurance for Uber’s self-driving car operations.

“Marsh Risk is committed to advancing the autonomous vehicle industry through tailored risk and insurance solutions,” said Melissa Daly, leader of Marsh Risk’s autonomous driving, mobility and platform risk practice. “Our collaboration with ibott and Uber represents a meaningful step forward in providing a scalable, cost-effective framework for autonomous vehicle risk management and accelerating the responsible deployment of autonomous technology.”

Andy Parr, Vice President of Insurance at Uber, commented: “We understand the challenges and changing landscape in the autonomous vehicle space, and we’re excited to offer a comprehensive insurance solution exclusively available to our partners.”

“Uber’s self-driving car insurance policy is an important part of a unique set of services and capabilities that are helping partners build and successfully commercialize self-driving vehicles in multiple markets around the world.”

Chris Moore, president of Apollo ibott’s commercial business, added: “Autonomous vehicles require a completely different approach to risk and insurance. ibott has more than a decade of successful experience in autonomous driving risk solutions and is a market leader in designing coverage for this evolving ecosystem. Our partnership with Marsh and Uber to develop this proprietary program reflects a new underwriting thinking. By integrating coverage and aligning interests across the value chain, this solution reduces uncertainty and provides the protection needed for large-scale deployment.”
