IMA Financial Group places $4bn risk programme for AI-data centre company

North American insurance brokerage IMA Financial Group has completed a $4 billion property insurance placement on behalf of a publicly traded artificial intelligence and high-performance computing (HPC) data center company.

The transaction was conducted by a leading global real estate operator and represents one of the largest single real estate placements in the digital infrastructure sector.

It also continues a trend for the insurance brokerage, which has advised on billions of dollars of projects in recent years.

IMA has a proven track record of building large, complex insurance solutions across digital infrastructure, with multiple placements totaling over $1 billion in insured value.

The company’s data center risk specialization, started in the early 2000s, allows them to develop the technical fluency and industry expertise necessary for today’s demanding artificial intelligence and HPC facilities.

Patrick Datz, head of IMA’s digital risk practice, said: “This placement reflects our two decades of experience in the data center space, bringing that expertise into today’s state-of-the-art facilities. AI and HPC data centers are among the most complex, capital-intensive assets in the world.

“They need an advisor who understands the technology and risks and can communicate with the still-evolving carrier market. We help clients build plans that reflect the true value and operational realities of what they are building.”

As hyperscalers, colocation operators and AI infrastructure companies invest hundreds of billions of dollars in new buildings and equipment, insurance must keep pace.

IMA explains that standard commercial property insurance does not meet the criteria for a facility housing thousands of GPUs, custom power supplies and cutting-edge cooling systems.

“As investment in AI infrastructure accelerates, we are seeing growing demand for insurance solutions that can scale with these assets,” said Rachel Nixon, senior vice president and head of the Data Center Partnership practice at IMA. “IMA’s expert team is bringing a broad portfolio of complex projects to market, with success dependent on the coordination of technical expertise, underwriting strategies and long-term carrier relationships.”

IMA provides comprehensive data center insurance solutions covering the full spectrum of digital infrastructure risks including: property, builder’s risk, cyber and technology, E&O, D&O liability, criminal and parametric business interruption solutions.

Before a single submission enters the market, its consultative approach considers how the facility will be built, how revenue will be generated and the shortcomings of traditional insurance structures.
