Wicker stars Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård have been lifting the lid on some of their new film’s unconventional sex scenes.
In their new twisted fairytale, Olivia plays a lonely woman whose life is transformed when she requests that someone make her a new husband out of wicker, who comes to life and opens her eyes to a world of romance.
Much has already been made of the film’s many sex scenes, which both of its leads opened up about in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times.
Olivia admitted that the heavy prosthetics Alexander had to wear to get into character actually helped make the shoot “less embarrassing for me” than past love scenes she’d been involved in “because there wasn’t skin touching”.
Alexander also noted: “What I thought was really fun was that the protagonist was not only a woman … but a woman who wasn’t 23 … and it can still be steamy and sexy and fun and exciting, even.”
Notably, there is also no nudity in the sequences, which Olivia said was a mutual decision across the board to allow people to use their “imaginations” more.
In fact, she suggested that the most sensual part of the film didn’t even take place between the sheets, but at a village dance.
The Oscar winner enthused: “It’s lovely, and they forget completely that there’s anyone around them. They are absolutely in the moment. I don’t think they consider that anyone could be looking at them.”
Directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer have previously spoken about the film’s racier moments, with the former admitting that Olivia and Alexander’s performances added a whole other layer to them on set.
“We always thought of the sex scenes as the comedy of the film, too. They were supposed to be played for laughs, and they are,” she recently told The Hollywood Reporter.
“But I think once we actually had Alexander in costume, Olivia and Ita O’Brien, our intimacy coordinator, working together on these scenes – that’s when they did become surprisingly more sexy than we thought they would.”
Wicker hits cinemas on Friday 30 October.
