Global insurance company American International Group (AIG) has hired AXA Group’s Nancy Bewlay as its new executive vice president (EVP) and chief global underwriting officer (CUO), based in New York and reporting to AIG President and CEO Eric Andersen.
Bewlay joins AIG’s executive leadership team on September 8, 2026, where she will be responsible for the insurance company’s underwriting strategy. Her responsibilities will include advancing underwriting management best practices and overseeing AIG’s global underwriting organization, as well as a focus on underwriting excellence and discipline within the company’s established risk appetite.
She has more than thirty years of industry experience. Prior to joining AIG, she served as Group Chief Underwriting and Pricing Officer at French insurance company AXA and since 2023 has been a member of the Group Management Committee.
Prior to this, Bewlay held a variety of roles at AXA XL, the property and casualty and professional risks division of AXA, including global chief underwriting officer for long-tail insurance, global chief underwriting officer and chief executive of reinsurance.
Earlier in his career, Bewlay held senior leadership positions at Swiss Re, one of the world’s largest reinsurers, CV Starr and General Star Management Company.
“Nancy Bewlay is a highly skilled and experienced insurance executive with an outstanding track record of driving underwriting excellence and building high-performing global underwriting teams,” said Andersen. “Her experience leading underwriting organizations through multiple market cycles, coupled with her ability to strengthen portfolio management and risk analysis at scale, will be a tremendous asset to AIG.” “I am pleased to welcome Nancy.
