VIG expands telematics offering in CEE with Dolphin Technologies stake acquisition

Vienna Insurance Group (VIG), an Austria-based insurance group operating across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), has acquired a 25% stake in Dolphin Technologies, a Vienna-based technology company.

The completion of this transaction is still subject to the necessary approval by the Federal Competition Authority.

Through this investment, VIG reinforces a collaboration established in 2022 aimed at advancing AI-driven telematics across the Group.

Partnering with Dolphin enables VIG to continue broadening its market leadership in CEE telematics solutions, the firm stated.

Founded in Vienna in 2001, Dolphin Technologies develops AI-powered telematics platforms and digital mobility services for insurance and automotive companies.

Its telematics solutions are already used by seven VIG companies: Kooperativa in Czechia, Kooperativa in Slovakia, Compensa in Poland, Compensa in Lithuania, Union in Hungary, Omniasig in Romania and Ray Sigorta in Türkiye.

Gábor Lehel, member of the Management Board and Chief Innovation Officer of the Vienna Insurance Group, commented: “The decision to choose Dolphin as a partner for the implementation and phased roll-out across our markets was not based solely on its mature technology and ease of use for users.

“It is also the high level of flexibility and the consideration given to the individual requirements of the countries and our companies that have prompted us to take this stake and enable us to further intensify our digital service concepts.”

The telematics solution integrates into existing customer apps and adapts to local market, product, and regulatory needs. Users can access driving behaviour insights, safety and eco-friendly tips, assistance, emergency functions, and potential cashback or bonus rewards for responsible driving.

The data required for this is processed within the framework of the respective product design and in compliance with applicable data protection requirements.

Telematics for the insurance sector is also increasingly evolving, going beyond simple data collection, into a tool for prevention, risk management and customer service.

Leveraging Dolphin’s extensive background in machine learning, predictive analytics, and mobility data science can support the refinement of risk models while driving the creation of innovative digital services, VIG stated.

“This investment is a strong sign of confidence in us and the logical next step in a partnership that has already proven its worth in seven markets. With its strong presence in CEE and its decentralised business model, VIG offers excellent conditions for rolling out successful solutions in further markets and thereby creating tangible benefits for more customers,” said Harald Trautsch, founder and CEO of Dolphin Technologies.
