Donald Trump spent Tuesday night posting on Truth Social as the Republican candidates he endorsed – and in many cases hand-picked during the primaries – all fell like dominoes.
But the president wasn’t about to take any blame for his party’s midterm disaster despite his record-low approval ratings, his unpopular war in Iran and the affordability crisis he exacerbated with his trade wars.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Trump wrote at 10:37 p.m. “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
He also attacked Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his race earlier in the evening to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in a political earthquake.
“If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO [Republican In Name Only] in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost,” Trump wrote at 11:35 p.m. “He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
In another message, Trump vowed to become “a political pundit” and reveal why each candidate won and lost. Then, shortly after telling The New York Times that he had accepted the results and hoped to work with the incoming Democratic majorities, he posted an image that would suggest the opposite:
Finally ― at least for the moment ― Trump attacked Fox News for having former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on the air and even blamed the right-wing network for the historic losses suffered by the Republicans.
Trump wrote just before midnight:
“Why does FoxNews have Bill de Blasio, the Worst Mayor in the History of New York City, on air, ranting and raving like a Lunatic? He left the City in disgrace, and the damage he caused was incalculable — It has never been the same, and now he’s telling us how to run America. FoxNews bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Dumocrat opposition, and worse. GOD BLESS AMERICA! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
Trump also spent the evening on the phone, frantically calling and texting reporters as the results came in.
The president spent much of the last month campaigning for Republican candidates, most of whom lost. Many were GOP seats considered safe for years, even decades.
However, come January, Democrats will take clear majorities in both the House and Senate.
