International specialty insurance company Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK) has announced the appointment of Alex Barnes as Head of Marine and Energy.
Barnes, who has led the Marine and Energy Division on an interim basis since January 2026, now serves in the role permanently, effective immediately.
She brings more than 28 years of underwriting and leadership experience to the position and has been with TMK since November 2024.
Prior to joining TMK, Barnes spent 21 years at Beazley, building and developing underwriting capabilities across the energy sector across portfolio management, client service and technical underwriting.
TMK noted that her appointment reflects the next phase of its long-term investment in its marine and energy portfolio, with the company planning to make further senior hires in the coming months as it seeks to expand its market share across all marine and energy sectors.
Vivek Syal, chief underwriting officer at TMK, said: “Alex brings deep technical expertise and a strong track record, and her appointment reflects our commitment to building a leading market position across our marine and energy underwriting portfolio. We have a long-term view on this business and we are investing in the talent and capabilities needed to achieve this goal.”
Barnes added: “We are building a strong operational foundation within the marine and energy sector, strengthening our leadership team and bringing in the specialist talent needed to serve our brokers and clients well. There is real interest across the business in growing our capabilities and I look forward to delivering on this in the coming months and years.”
Tobin Ryan, head of claims at TMK, said: “At TMK, our leading underwriting and claims teams are built to work together and this is no different in the marine and energy sector. We have been investing in our claims capabilities alongside our underwriting teams and Alex’s appointment provides us with an integrated leadership structure to deliver a truly end-to-end service to our clients.”
