Sidley, an international law firm that advises insurance companies and financial institutions on regulatory and transactional matters, has appointed Carl Hotton as a partner in its London M&A and private equity practice.

Most recently, he served as a partner in the corporate sector at DLA Piper, specializing in insurance M&A and reinsurance transactions.

Hotton has an extensive cross-border corporate practice and has extensive experience advising clients on transactions across the insurance sector, including the property and casualty, life and Lloyd’s markets.

He advises insurance companies, reinsurers, intermediaries and financial sponsors on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, insurance portfolio transfers, reinsurance transactions, strategic investments and joint ventures, group restructurings and related insurance regulatory matters.

Thomas Thesing, managing partner and member of the Management and Executive Committee at Sidley London, commented: “Carl is a strategic addition to our growing London insurance practice and adds necessary scale to our growing cross-border work for clients in the United States and London.

“The firm’s significant investment in its transactions, disputes and regulatory practices in London is deliberate, as we now advise more than 80% of the firm’s top 50 corporate clients in London.”

Perry J. Shwachman, global co-head of M&A and Private Equity at Sidley and a member of the Management and Executive Committee, added: “The relocation of Sean Carney to London earlier this year gives Carl the depth needed to represent clients in the world’s most significant insurance transactions.

“Our insurance business is truly a market leader and, with the London team led by Carl, Sean and James Phythian-Adams, we will continue to deliver a quality service that enables our clients to achieve the best possible outcomes.”
