The Reinsurance Association of America (RAA), a US trade association representing companies operating in the reinsurance sector, has announced changes to its board leadership, with John Bender appointed Chairman and Christopher Donelan named Vice Chairman.
Bender, who is Chairman of Reinsurance and Risk Management at Allied World Assurance Company, takes over as chair of the RAA Board of Directors. Donelan, Chief Executive Officer of Global Reinsurance at Sompo International Holdings Ltd., becomes Vice Chairman. The appointments are effective immediately, according to the RAA.
The leadership changes come as former RAA chairman Nic Berg leaves SCOR US to take up a new position as CEO of Sompo’s UK Insurance business.

Bender brings experience across reinsurance and risk management to the RAA board leadership role. The RAA said he is responsible at Allied World for the company’s assumed and ceded reinsurance activities, enterprise risk management and catastrophe modelling. He is also a member of Allied World’s Executive Board.
Bender studied at St John’s University in Queens, New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Science from the College of Business Administration. He also serves on the university’s Board of Governors.
Donelan has held the position of CEO of Global Reinsurance at Sompo since March 2020. Before becoming CEO, he held several senior roles within the business, including Deputy CEO for Global Reinsurance, Chairman of North America Reinsurance and Chief Underwriting Officer of Global Casualty Reinsurance, according to the RAA.
He joined Sompo in October 2013 after holding senior underwriting, claims and reinsurance management positions at other insurance and reinsurance organisations. Donelan holds an MBA in Insurance and Risk Management from St John’s University.
