Riverdance star Michael Flatley has announced that his wife of 20 years, fellow dancer Niamh O’Brien, has died at the age of 52.

On Monday evening, Michael announced the devastating news in a social media post, which read: “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of 20 years has gone to the Lord in Heaven.”

He continued: “She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.

“Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us. Please keep Niamh, Michael St James [the couple’s 19-year-old son], and our family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Michael’s post included photographs of several highlights from their relationship, including their wedding day and a family holiday with their son.

A spokesperson told the Irish Times that Niamh died at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin following what they described as “a period of illness”.

“The Flatley and O’Brien families are devastated by Niamh’s sudden passing and have asked that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with this heartbreaking loss,” their rep said. “They express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Beacon Hospital who cared for Niamh over the past few weeks, and to everyone who has offered their kindness and support to the family.”

They tied the knot in October 2006, and welcomed their son, Michael St James, in April 2007.

Niamh began her Irish dancing career as a teenager, at one point placing fourth in the world championships, before being cast in shows like Riverdance and Lord Of The Dance, which were produced by Michael.
