Malaysia Reinsurance Corporation (Malaysia Re) and China Re Life Insurance Company Limited (China Re Life) have signed a landmark reinsurance treaty to support a dedicated framework for cancer precision medicine (CPM) treatment coverage in Malaysia.
This marks Malaysia’s first reinsurance framework for advanced cancer treatments, including CAR-T cell therapy, targeted therapies and access to overseas oncology care.
The treaty was signed during a visit by China Re Life General Manager Li Qi to Malaysia Re’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
It forms the core of the broader healthcare ecosystem being developed by Malaysia Re in partnership with China Re Life.
From product design and market engagement to onboarding distributors through a multi-channel distribution model, Malaysia Re has built a go-to-market infrastructure that converts reinsurance and takaful capacity into accessible, consumer-ready insurance coverage.
This end-to-end ecosystem is coordinated by Beacon Global Risk Solutions Limited, Malaysia Re’s appointed reinsurance broker.
This multi-tiered framework – covering reinsurance/takaful, primary insurance/takaful, direct pharmacy distribution, hospitals and collaborations with leading pharmaceutical companies – reflects Malaysia’s long-term commitment to expanding access to innovative and affordable cancer care solutions.
The CPM insurance/takaful products supported by the treaty aim to expand access to precision cancer care by covering selected advanced treatments. Drawing on China Re Life’s experience in supporting large-scale CPM models in China, Malaysian Re will provide local insurance companies and takaful operators with dedicated reinsurance/takaful capabilities to address this growing risk area.
The product also includes overseas treatment benefits, enabling patients to seek treatment at designated oncology centers in China if medical conditions permit.
Going forward, Malaysia Re and China Re Life plan to explore opportunities to expand their collaboration into critical illness, longevity and health management solutions across Southeast Asia.
The two organizations are also exploring staff exchange programs and joint technical working groups to accelerate the transfer of capabilities between the two agencies.
Ahmad Noor Azhari Abdul Manaf, President and CEO of Malaysia Re Bhd, said: “At Malaysia Re, we believe that the role of reinsurance/retakaful is not just to transfer or share risk, it should also enable people to meaningfully access protection and care. With more than 60% of cancer patients diagnosed at an advanced stage, this agreement with China Re Life is an important milestone in helping to expand Malaysians’ access to advanced cancer treatments and achieve better treatment outcomes.”
“As Malaysia’s national reinsurer, we are proud to support the development of affordable and innovative health solutions and look forward to expanding our collaboration in other areas of medical and life insurance as well as takaful.”
Li Qi, general manager of China Re Life Insurance Co., Ltd., added: “China Re Life has established its position as Asia’s leading life and health reinsurer by entering where no other company has gone – deeply touching the complex, underserved risk categories that matter to people’s lives. Our collaboration with Malaysia Re on precision cancer medicine is a natural manifestation of this commitment. Southeast Asia has the same unmet needs that we address in China, and we believe this partnership will have the same transformative impact on millions of families in the region.”
