Jennifer Lawrence has revealed she once had to put her foot down when she discovered that there were crew members on the set of one of her films who weren’t authorised to be there as she prepared to shoot a nude scene.
The Oscar winner recently appeared on the podcast Call Her Daddy, where she said she had felt compelled to make a stand in the moment, in the hopes that younger stars wouldn’t wind up in that same position.
She recalled: “There was an instance on set where crew members who weren’t approved, when I was doing nudity, were on set.
“I came down hard on it purely because if we’re not setting that kind of principle at the level at which we’re doing it right now, then what on earth is going to happen to an 18-year-old unknown?”
Jen continued: “If she shows up and there’s people that aren’t approved [on set for a nude scene], she’s going to be in a position [where she’s thinking], ‘do I say something and get a reputation for being difficult? Or do I just let these people that I’m not comfortable seeing me naked see me naked?’.”
“[That’s why] it was important to me to explain to the people why that was not OK,” she added.
In more recent years, changes have been brought about to film sets in light of the Me Too movement, most notably the introduction of intimacy co-ordinators to help actors feel more comfortable while shooting sexual and nude scenes.
Last year, the Hunger Games star said that she didn’t feel she needed an intimacy co-ordinator while shooting Die My Love with Robert Pattinson, claiming on the podcast Las Culturistas: “I felt really safe with Rob. He is not pervy and very in love with [his partner] Suki Waterhouse.”
“There was never any weird like, ‘Does he think I like him?’ If there was a little bit of that, I would probably have an intimacy co-ordinator,” she continued.
“A lot of male actors get offended if you don’t want to fuck them, and then the punishment starts. He was not like that.”
Earlier in her career, just two years after winning her Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer was one of the more high-profile stars involved in a mass celebrity hacking which saw several celebrities’ private nude pictures being illegally obtained and shared online.
Jennifer has spoken candidly about the effect this had on her numerous times over the year, most notably in an interview with Vanity Fair months afterwards.
“Anybody who looked at those pictures, you’re perpetuating a sexual offence. You should cower with shame,” she told the magazine in 2014.
She added: “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change.”
