This article contains major spoilers for the latest season of Slow Horses.
Slow Horses’ head writer has a message for any viewers still upset about the events of season six.
The most recent instalments of the Apple TV+ drama saw several key characters being killed off, perhaps most notably Tom Brooke’s Coe and Ruth Bradley’s Flyte.
During a recent interview with Gold Derby, Gaby Chiappe – the head writer of season six – was asked about these character’s deaths, pointing out that she and her team wouldn’t kill off “anyone that doesn’t die in the [Slough House] books”.
“A number of people who I know well – and also not so well! – have been texting me going, ‘You killed Coe! What were you thinking?’,” she then revealed. “And I’m like, ‘Well, to be fair, [Slough House author] Mick Herron killed him first’.”
She continued: “I feel a little bit like I was just following orders, but you do get to really feel for the characters and they matter to you. When they die, I hope it does matter to people because it shouldn’t feel like, ‘Oh well’. It’s not that kind of show.
“It does kill people so you never feel safe; you never know who’s going to survive, but it should always matter. The deaths always matter.”
Gaby did point out that because season six is an amalgamation of two Slough House novels, “the deaths happen in a slightly different way, but I think the spirit of them is retained from the book”.
As well as the deaths that occurred over the course of the season, the most recent Slow Horses finale ended on what’s been described as the “biggest cliffhanger” in the show’s history, with Jack Lowden’s character’s life hanging in the balance after seemingly being poisoned.
Season seven of Slow Horses will premiere on Apple TV+ in 2027, with production on the eighth currently underway in London.
