ICEYE, a global leader in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite systems, has partnered with the Florida Flood Applied Research and Innovation Center to improve flood preparedness, response, recovery and resilience efforts.
Florida’s Flood Center plays a key role in the state’s adaptation and mitigation efforts for extreme weather and hurricanes, primarily by coordinating research and data to assist policymakers and local communities in making informed decisions.
Within this framework, ICEYE has monitored more than 18 flood events across the state since 2022, providing critical situational awareness to guide response planning by emergency management agencies and insights into strategies to mitigate hazards and increase resilience across the state.
ICEYE’s partnership with the state of Florida leverages years of successful operations during major storms. State agencies have relied on ICEYE data since Hurricane Ian in 2022, and during Hurricanes Debbie, Milton, and Helen in 2024.
ICEYE noted that these events highlight the critical role of satellite flood intelligence when rainfall, cloud cover and restricted ground access impede traditional assessments.
“This partnership enhances our ability to provide emergency managers with timely, actionable flood data when it matters most, while also guiding our efforts to increase the resilience of flood-prone communities,” said Dr. Charles Jacoby, deputy director of the Florida Flood Center.
Adding: “With ICEYE’s satellite-based insights, we can provide teams with a consistent view of the likely and actual impacts of flooding, which is necessary to coordinate response and recovery actions, while also providing valuable insights to guide long-term strategies to mitigate damage and build resilience.”
ICEYE’s Flood Insights provides an always-on monitoring tool for visualizing flood depth and extent data from multiple sources, while Flood Rapid Impact provides rolling updates and automated analysis as floods progress, and Flood Alerts help responders prepare.
Together, these capabilities improve situational awareness, supporting rapid response and smarter decision-making during disasters.
“The U.S.’s hurricane season impacts dozens of states, and we believe Florida is leading the way in adopting innovative approaches to disaster response and resilience,” said Andy Read, vice president of global government solutions at ICEYE. “By integrating satellite flood intelligence, Florida sets an example of how states can use data to better protect communities before, during and after disasters.”
As floods become more frequent and severe, Florida’s partnership with ICEYE strengthens the Flood Center’s ability to provide statewide flood data and recovery planning.
The company emphasizes that ICEYE’s advanced insights will help emergency managers and water management districts make coordinated, data-driven decisions to protect vulnerable communities before, during and after major storm events.
