Global insurer Generali has entered the Lloyd’s marketplace with the launch of Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge, which will assume a share of the carrier’s outward reinsurance placements, across multiple lines of business.
For its inaugural Lloyd’s syndicate, Generali has received in-principle approval to commence underwriting operations on the platform in 2027.
The large insurer describes the launch as a “significant step forward” in the Groups’ reinsurance strategy, as the syndicate is designed to optimise its outwards reinsurance programme and risk capital.
Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge will strengthen access to diversified sources of risk capital for Generali, and also reinforce long-term partnerships across the global reinsurance sector, which is line with the firm’s “Lifetime Partner 27: Driving Excellence” strategic plan.
As well as gaining from the financial strength and market reach of Lloyd’s, the world’s oldest insurance and reinsurance marketplace, the new syndicate stands to benefit from the Lloyd’s global licence network, which provides managing agents and syndicates with direct and reinsurance authorisations across more than 200 territories around the world.
Further, via Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge, Generali will bring to Lloyd’s a “distinctive diversification opportunity” in terms of both geographical footprint and type of ceded businesses.
Generali explains that its outward reinsurance book offers significant exposure to risks across continental Europe, which it sees as complementary to Lloyd’s traditional global focus. The portfolio also provides a balanced mix of retail and middle market business access across multiple classes and territories.
Franco Urlini, Group P&C & Reinsurance Officer of Generali, commented: “The launch of Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge marks an important milestone in the evolution of our reinsurance strategy under the “Lifetime Partner 27: Driving Excellence” plan, with the goal to optimise capital at Group level. By leveraging the Lloyd’s global platform, we can develop tailored and innovative risk transfer solutions while accessing new sources of capital to support the growth ambitions of our P&C portfolio. It is an extension of our strategy aimed at maintaining broad and diversified access to reinsurance and alternative capital markets while adding a further tool to the Group’s risk transfer capabilities.”
Dawn Miller, Chief Commercial Officer of Lloyd’s and CEO of Lloyd’s Americas, said: “Our ambition is to attract the leading global underwriters to Lloyd’s, so we are delighted to be welcoming Generali with the launch of Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge. This vehicle will open up deeper connections between insurance, reinsurance and capital markets, underscoring Lloyd’s role as the leading global marketplace for innovative risk transfer solutions.”
