Descartes names Oliver Wyman’s Jean Hermelin as Chief Strategy Officer

Descartes Underwriting, a specialist in corporate parametric re/insurance solutions for climate and emerging risks, has appointed Jean Hermelin to the newly created role of chief strategy officer.

At Descartes, Hermelin will report to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder Tanguy Touffut and join the company’s Executive Committee.

He is tasked with leading the development of group strategy and overseeing its implementation, with a focus on identifying new growth levers and improving operational and sales efficiencies.

Hermelin has over 12 years of strategic consulting experience at Oliver Wyman, where he led transformation and commercial effectiveness projects for international insurance companies. His cross-functional expertise spans business development, partner negotiations and operational excellence.

The appointment follows continued growth at Descartes, with the company aiming to reach $500 million in premiums within three years and over $250 million in premiums by 2025.

The parametric reinsurance/insurance company has also expanded its international business, with more than 40% of its business coming from North America and 25% from the Asia-Pacific region.

Descartes recently restructured its marketing department to support sales efforts. The Chief Insurance Officer department is now responsible for content creation and lead generation under Maxime Deroubaix, while the CEO Office manages brand, external communications and events under the direction of Marie-Anne Faidy.
