Aviva’s global risk management solution has partnered with ONYX Insight, a global provider of predictive analytics for the wind industry, to provide wind asset owners and operators with tools to help reduce operational and insurance risks while optimizing asset lifecycles.
Enhancing and maintaining turbine performance is one of the most significant operating costs owners and operators face throughout the life of an asset. For those without access to accurate fleet-wide performance data and entire turbine condition monitoring, these costs can be exacerbated by reactive maintenance strategies and increased risk of events requiring unplanned and expensive repairs.
Aviva and ONYX Insight have launched a pilot partnership to encourage the adoption of ONYX Insight’s engineering-grade, AI-driven predictive analytics, enabling Aviva customers to take a more proactive approach to turbine maintenance.
The partnership is designed to help asset owners reduce downtime, manage operations and maintenance (O&M) risks and protect long-term asset value while aligning operational performance with insurance requirements.
Alexis Grenon, CEO of ONYX Insight, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Aviva on this project and excited to work with its policyholders to help reduce risk throughout the entire turbine and project lifecycle, from early operations to later optimization and life extension. Our advanced fault detection capabilities can identify issues up to two years before a potential loss event occurs, giving wind asset owners and operators peace of mind and allowing them to take a truly proactive approach to managing risk and optimizing maintenance programmes.”
Chris Andrews, director of global risk management solutions at Aviva, added: “As the industry grapples with aging fleets and increasing serial defects, insurers and wind asset owners are under increasing pressure to strengthen their resilience strategies. We support clients by helping them identify, assess and quantify risks to build sustainable industry growth.
“Broader adoption of data and analytics can provide deeper insights into turbine conditions, enhance underwriting, and enable better risk management practices that can help prevent unplanned downtime and unexpected costs.”
As the energy transition accelerates, it is increasingly important to effectively manage aging turbines to maximize their service life in mature markets, while ensuring that new turbine models reach commercial maturity. Advances in turbine monitoring technology and actionable AI insights provide the industry with greater capabilities to respond to risk exposures more effectively.
ONYX Insight applies machine learning models to one of the wind industry’s largest failure data sets, leveraging more than 15 years of historical data to provide early visibility of emerging turbine issues and help reduce the likelihood of severe losses. Its solutions include retrofit condition monitoring systems (CMS) for drivetrains, blades, towers and foundations, end-of-warranty health assessments, condition monitoring services, advanced SCADA and fleet analytics, dynamic remaining service life modeling, OPEX predictions, root cause analysis and main bearing life extension.
