Apollo expands reinsurance capabilities with new international casualty class

Apollo, part of Skyward Group, an innovation-focused insurance platform, has announced the launch of its international casualty reinsurance category, expanding its existing portfolio and expanding its presence in global markets.

The firm views the addition as a strategic move to support clients with complex risk requirements while introducing a lower-volatility component to its overall portfolio.

Apollo has appointed Tim Mackenzie to lead the new business line, who will take up the post in October. He has over 20 years of experience in the international casualty and reinsurance markets, most recently with Berkley Re. Apollo values the impact of his industry background and professional network on the development of his class.

Paul Sandi, head of Apollo Reinsurance, said: “Tim’s outstanding reputation and strong relationships will lay the foundation for the division’s success in 2025, with us beginning to underwrite the class from 1 January 2027. His appointment underlines our commitment to attracting top talent who can drive success in emerging opportunities.”

Apollo said underwriting for the new category is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2027, as part of its long-term reinsurance strategy. The company believes the move will help balance the portfolio while strengthening its ability to address broader international casualty risks.

James Slaughter, chief underwriting officer at Apollo, added: “The launch of International Casualty Re reinforces our position as a forward-looking reinsurer committed to supporting the needs of our diverse clients. This category not only enhances the stability of the portfolio, but also enhances our ability to deliver market-leading returns through thoughtful diversification and disciplined execution.”
