Andrew Garfield has admitted that appearing in his new movie Artificial made him rethink his own AI usage.
The British actor takes the lead as OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman in the upcoming film, which centres around the tech billionaire’s brief firing and rehiring back in 2023.
Speaking to Variety at a screening of Artificial, Andrew was asked how his attitude towards AI has changed since making the film.
“I got a bit scared,” he admitted. “I felt a little mistrusting of the technology.”
Andrew continued: “It feels like the people who are creating and kind of encouraging us to use the technology don’t exactly know its capacity themselves.
“So, that feels a little irresponsible to me, personally.”
Prior to that, Andrew claimed that “luckily” he didn’t feel a “need” to use AI “in the same way that other people in other industries might”.
“I was [using ChatGPT] for some research purposes,” he explained. “But then, I was using it as a kind of fancy Google. That’s not what it’s meant for.
“So, I didn’t feel the need [to use artificial intelligence]. For me. And that’s a privilege, I know.”
HuffPost UK has contacted OpenAI for comment.
Artificial was helmed by Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino, the Italian director whose past work has included films like Call Me By Your Name and Challengers.
Besides Andrew, the cast also includes Anora star Yura Borisov and A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro, alongside the likes of Chris O’Dowd, Girls’ Zosia Mamet, Monster’s Cooper Koch and Mark Rylance.
The film’s official synopsis teases that it “chronicles the incredibly consequential days leading up to the sudden firing and reinstatement of Sam Altman, as the fate of who gets to control the technology at the centre of an AI arms race hangs in the balance”.
Artificial is slated for release in the UK in January 2027. Check out the trailer for yourself below:
