Amwins Global Risks extends C&I insurance facility to battery storage and EV charging assets

Amwins Global Risks (AGR), the specialist global risk division of Amwins, has broadened the scope of its Commercial & Industrial (C&I) insurance facility to include battery energy storage systems (BESS) and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

The expanded facility enables developers, owners and investors to insure multiple distributed energy assets across different locations under one insurance programme.

AGR said the updated offering is intended to meet the needs of businesses developing portfolios of smaller energy infrastructure projects, which may be spread across several sites but form part of a larger investment.

“The expansion is designed to support the growing deployment of distributed energy infrastructure, where individual assets may be relatively small, and geographically dispersed, but collectively represent increasingly substantial portfolios for developers, owners and investors,” commented Dr Tom Harries, Director at Amwins Global Risks. “By aggregating assets within a portfolio, AGR provides a consistent underwriting approach across multiple locations while assessing and managing accumulated natural catastrophe exposure at portfolio level.”

The facility will provide insurance options for the construction of EV charging infrastructure in the United States, as well as cover for assets once they are operational. AGR said protection can include Delay in Start-Up (DSU) and Business Interruption (BI), addressing risks that may affect project completion or interrupt business activities.

The structure also allows deductibles to be adjusted to reflect the size and risk profile of individual installations. According to AGR, this offers an alternative to insurance arrangements developed for utility-scale projects, under which deductibles may be less suited to smaller assets.

AGR said the growth of distributed energy infrastructure has created insurance requirements that do not always fit established models. While traditional cover has often focused on individual projects or large-scale energy developments, battery storage facilities and EV charging networks can comprise numerous smaller installations operating across a broad geographical area.

“Individual sites can be relatively small, but developers are increasingly building portfolios comprising numerous assets across multiple locations,”added Harries. “Bringing those assets together allows us to underwrite them efficiently at portfolio scale, while still recognising the individual risk characteristics of each site.”

The expanded facility builds on AGR’s existing Community Solar offering, which provides portfolio-based insurance for commercial and community-scale solar installations. By adding battery storage and EV charging infrastructure, AGR is extending its approach to cover a broader range of distributed energy assets.

Harries said the inclusion of these technologies will allow AGR to assess how a portfolio’s exposure to natural catastrophes changes as further projects are incorporated. The programme is intended to accommodate portfolio growth while taking account of the risk characteristics of individual sites.

“The addition of BESS and EV charging infrastructure reflects the increasing convergence of distributed energy technologies,” said Harries. “It allows us to focus on monitoring how the portfolio’s natural catastrophe exposure changes as new projects are added and gives developers the freedom to concentrate on building out their portfolios, knowing their insurance programme can adapt and grow alongside them.”
