Critics and fans are both in agreement that the second season of Black Doves was definitely worth the two-year wait.
Earlier this week, the British spy thriller returned to Netflix for a second outing, with Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw returning as Helen and Sam, lifelong best friends who both work for shady secret organisations.
Season two has eight episodes, and given that you don’t need to save them for close to Christmas this time around, the chances are you may well have already blown through them all in the last few days.
And if that’s the case, the chances are you’re wondering if more episodes could be in store.
Here’s everything we know about the future of Black Doves so far…
Will Black Doves get a season 3 on Netflix?
For the time being, Black Doves is yet to be officially renewed for a third run on Netflix. The good news, though, is that creator Joe Barton is definitely up for more if Netflix is on board.
He told the Pilot TV podcast that a third season is currently “an ongoing conversation”, but a writers’ room has already been set up.
“Netflix are really behind it, they’ve said that thing ‘we’d love to re-commission it’,” he claimed. “I’m like, ‘no-one’s stopping you, you can!’.”
He continued: “They’ve been really supportive, I think everyone’s at the whims of market forces, etcetera. So we hope so.”
In a separate interview with The Independent, Joe admitted that when the call came from Netflix asking for more after season one, it came as a bit of a surprise.
“The first series had gone well and Netflix renewed it before it even came out, which was exciting,” he recalled. “I was on holiday, actually, in Italy, and in a supermarket when I got a call being like, ‘you need to come home, we’re going again’.
“When I got back, we started writing the second series straight away and we were like, ‘oh my God, what can they do next?’ We hadn’t planned a second series, so it was exciting to get back into it and now we’re in the process of hopefully getting a third series.”
As for what a third season could entail, Joe told Pilot TV that he’d like to dive deeper into Eleanor and Williams’ back stories – and he’s already got some ideas for who he’d love to join the cast.
When asked by Esquire for any dream guest stars, he named “Tom Hanks and Elliot Page”.
“He sent me an email saying he liked the show, after series one. So Elliot would be amazing, and I’ve worked with him before,” he added.
Joe previously wrote the screenplay for the 2017 romance My Days Of Mercy, which starred Elliot and Kate Mara.
While we await more info, the first two seasons of Black Doves are currently both streaming on Netflix.
