The hours we once spent scrolling every streaming service at our fingertips for something to watch have now become replaced with poring through Letterboxd to see what friends, colleagues and, indeed, complete strangers have had to say about every movie we’ve ever watched.
Letterboxd, the film-based social media site, has been running for 15 years, but has had a boom in popularity in recent years, with cinephiles enthusiastically logging the movies they’ve screening and ranking them out of a possible five stars, as well as carefully selecting their “top four”, which are pinned to the top of every user’s profile.
Helpfully, the site keeps a regularly-updated running list of which films feature in the most users’ “top fours”, so if ever you find yourself stuck for something quality to watch at home, this could be a good place to start.

These are the 10 films at the top of Letterboxd’s list at the time of writing, and where you can stream them at home…
10. Little Women (2019)
Long before she was heading up her long-awaited adaptation of the Narnia books and making billions with Barbie, filmmaker Greta Gerwig put her spin on the literary classic Little Women in the 2010s.
Her cosy spin on the Louisa May Alcot novel reunited the director with Lady Bird’s Saoirse Ronan and was packed with heart – not to mention a star-studded cast that included everyone from Florence Pugh and Laura Dern to Timothée Chalamet and Meryl actual Streep.
Little Women is available to buy on YouTube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and more.
9. Whiplash (2014)
Damien Chazelle’s tense exploration of ambition, obsession and the pursuit of perfection makes for an especially intense watch, centring around teenage jazz band drummer Andrew Neiman and his tyrannical mentor, the leader of his school’s studio band.
While the whole cast are exceptional, Miles Teller and JK Simmons steal the show as the story’s two central figures, with the latter winning an Oscar for his performance as the unrelenting Terence Fletcher.
Whiplash is available to buy on YouTube, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and more.
8. Good Will Hunting (1997)
The story behind this film is almost as inspiring as the one being portrayed on screen, with a young Matt Damon and Ben Affleck teaming up to write their script, inspired by their own personal feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction in their adolescence, eventually winning an Oscar for their efforts.
Good Will Hunting centres around the titular self-taught genius, played by Matt, who is working as a janitor at a local college. His life is changed when one of the faculty takes a chance on him, with Robin Williams also earning an Academy Award for his performance as Matt’s character’s therapist.
Good Will Hunting is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+ in the UK.
7. Fight Club (1999)
Famously, the “first rule of Fight Club” is that you “do not talk about Fight Club”, so we’ll spare you the ins and outs of this one in case you’ve still not had the chance to watch it for yourself.
But, rest assured, this surreal and surprising offering from David Fincher as every bit as gripping and mind-blowing as everyone says – and we’d recommend going in with as little information as you can to fully appreciate its many twists and turns.
Fight Club is available to stream on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max in the UK.
6. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
Speaking of surreal – Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is an absolute must-watch.
A collaboration between outside-the-box thinkers Michele Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, the dreamy film centres around the shy and mild-mannered Joel who undergoes a procedure to erase his outgoing ex-girlfriend from his memory when he learns she’s done the same thing after their break-up.
Eternal Sunshine is mostly set inside Joel’s imagination as he undergoes the process – and realises halfway through that he’s having second thoughts.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Is Mind is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
5. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
Adapted from the popular coming-of-age novella of the same name, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower take us through a year in the life of troubled high school senior Charlie Kelmeckis, whose life is transformed for the better when he discovers a new chosen family.
It’s not smooth sailing for the teenager, though, as he makes the emotional discovery that sometimes you need to deal with demons from your past before you can take a step into your future.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in the UK.
4. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
We can’t say we’re totally surprised that, of every rom-com out there, it’s 10 Things I Hate About You that’s earned the highest spot on Letterboxd’s list.
Boasting big laughs, emotional revelations and a truly stacked cast (Heath Ledger at his dreamiest! Joseph Gordon-Levitt at his sweetest! Julia Stiles at her angstiest! Allison Janney at her scene-stealer-est!), 10 Things is guaranteed to hit whether you’re watching for the first time or the 50th.
Oh, and you can impress everyone with your Shakespearean knowledge afterwards.
10 Things I Hate About You is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
3. La La Land (2016)
Damien Chazelle is the only director who can brag about having two of his movies on Letterboxd’s countdown, having also helmed Whiplash earlier in his career.
But while Whiplash uses music to demonstrate tension and anxiety, La La Land is a heart-soaring musical that serves as both a love letter to Hollywood’s golden era and modern-day California.
Emma Stone won the first of her two (so far) Academy Awards for her leading performance in this, which reunited her with Ryan Gosling in one of the 21st century’s most unforgettable on-screen pairings.
Just prepare yourself to be humming Another Day Of Sun to yourself for weeks after you’ve watched it…
La La Land is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix in the UK.
2. Dead Poets Society (1989)
Dead Poets Society was divisive upon its release and remains so – but as you can tell, those who love it really love it.
The film centres around a group of unruly students at a boys’ boarding school, whose horizons are broadened when a new member of the faculty – played by the incomparable Robin Williams in another of his most-lauded dramatic roles – introduces them to a world outside of their traditional syllabus.
In many ways, Dead Poets Society was ahead of its time, exploring themes like the importance of community, generational trauma and men’s mental health decades before these would become more widespread conversations.
As such, viewing makes for a real emotional rollercoaster, as well as featuring some of the most iconic sequences in modern cinema.
Dead Poets Society is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
1. Interstellar (2014)
It kind of had to be, didn’t it?
While it would be Oppenheimer that would finally earn Christopher Nolan his first Oscars, it’s clearly Interstellar that cinephiles have latched onto the most.
Nolan at his most Nolan, Interstellar features all the hallmarks that have made the British filmmaker one of cinema’s most beloved auteurs, including an epic sprawling plot with universal themes, a soaring score for the history books and a cast that serves as a who’s who of modern cinema.
Led by Matthew McConaughey the film also features Nolan regulars Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and Michael Caine, alongside everyone from Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck to David Oyelowo and even a young Timothée Chalamet.
A unique thing about Interstellar, too, is that there are new things to spot every time you watch, which makes it ideal for repeat viewings (just make sure you’ve got snacks to hand, because it is not a short one).
Interstellar is available to stream on Netflix, HBO Max, Now and Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
