Sompo, a global provider of commercial and consumer property, casualty and specialty re/insurance, has appointed Bart Van Gysegem as regional manager for insurance in Belgium and the Netherlands, effective immediately.

It is the latest step in Sompo’s long-term growth plans in Belgium and the Netherlands, where the company last year received licenses from regulators to underwrite primary insurance locally.

In his new role, Van Gysegem will report to Ralph Brand, President Insurance Business Continental Europe and Türkiye, and will be based in Brussels. He will travel frequently to the Netherlands to fulfill his new duties.

In line with Sompo’s wider continental European growth strategy, Van Gysegem will drive the establishment of strong local infrastructure and teams.

The company also announced the opening of offices in Brussels and Rotterdam.

Van Gysegem has more than thirty years of experience in the insurance industry. Most recently, he served as Managing Director of the Belux Prime Clients division at broker Aon since 2018, having joined the broker two years ago.

Prior to that, he spent 20 years with two major international airlines in a series of increasingly senior management positions.

Brand commented: “Bart joins Sompo with an impressive career and reputation. He is highly respected and well-known in the Belgian and Dutch markets.

“Bart’s connections, insights and deep experience from both a carrier and broker perspective make him well-positioned to fully build, lead and grow our business in these two important countries.”
