For the most part, Sir Paul McCartney has given Sam Mendes’ upcoming “cinematic event” based on the lives and careers of The Beatles his blessing.
However, the music legend has admitted that there’s one aspect to Paul Mescal playing him that he can’t quite get on board with.
“Guess what? He’s smaller than the guy that plays John [Lennon],” an aghast Sir Paul told Amy Poehler in the latest episode of her podcast Good Hang.
“Sam Mendes is making the film. I said, ‘Sam, I’ve got just one thing that I need to say to you… Paul’s a bit small!’”
The 19-time Grammy winner continued: “I don’t know how Sam’s going to deal with it. He sent me a picture – a still from the filming they were doing, and they’re crossing the Abbey Road crossing. And the Paul character is markedly smaller!”
“And you can’t put lifts on those bare feet!” Amy quipped.
For the record, Paul Mescal is a respectable 5’11”, around the same height as the musician he’s playing, while his co-star Harris Dickinson is 6’2” compared to John Lennon’s 5’10”.
Oscar winner Sam Mendes is currently cooking up four different films about each of The Beatles, which will be released simultaneously in 2028.
Besides Harris and Paul, the movies will also feature Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, while the late George Harrison will be portrayed by Joseph Quinn.
Producer Pippa Harris told an audience at the London Film Festival earlier this week that the idea for the movies’ release was that people should “be able to experience them in the cinema during the same period” – but not necessarily the same day.
“So within the same month, you might see one a week, or you might see one weekend and two the next and one the next,” she noted (as reported by Variety).
“However you see it, I think our hope is that people will see all four films.”
