IUA launches NextGen Underwriting Committee to support early-career talent

The International Underwriting Association (IUA), the representative body for insurance and reinsurers operating in the London market, has announced the launch of a new underwriting group aimed at professionals in the early stages of their careers.

Known as the NextGen Underwriting Council, the scheme aims to support emerging talent in the London market and contribute to the provision of education and training through the association’s IUA Futures programme.

According to the IUA, the committee is composed of individuals from member companies with up to ten years of industry experience. Its members represent a broad range of insurance and reinsurance categories, reflecting the diversity of London’s corporate market.

The IUA Futures Program is overseen by Ela Metalia, who joined the Association in 2022 after graduating from Queen Mary University of London.

Metalia commented: “The NextGen Underwriting Council will be a hub for the development of underwriting talent across the London corporate market. Its key function will be to ensure industry training programs are useful and relevant. It will also liaise with industry leaders on the IUA Senior Underwriting Council to understand the skills and knowledge required in the future.”

She added: “Our IUA Futures program is designed to provide people with the essential skills and professional networks they need to build successful careers. Now the program is driven by a group that can provide a perspective that is directly aligned with the people it seeks to benefit.”

The IUA noted that the committee had already held its first meeting. During the meeting, members were briefed on current underwriting activities within the association and discussed ways to expand educational engagement with member companies. The group will also contribute ideas to the ongoing Underwriting Essentials webinar and workshop series.
