Over the course of the last month, you might have heard people talking about watching the romantic drama Leaving on Netflix.
Far from being a new show, the three-part miniseries actually aired on ITV way back in 2012, before being added to the streaming platform at the end of August 2026.
The series – which starred the late Helen McCrory opposite Callum Turner in his screen acting debut – centres around a married hotel owner, who embarks on an impassioned affair with a much younger man she meets at a wedding held at the venue.
Leaving was met with a positive reaction when it first aired more than a decade ago, and hasn’t left Netflix’s most-watched chart for the last few weeks.
The late Peaky Blinders star said around the show’s release that she had been drawn to the miniseries due to its “fresh” approach.
“I liked how it didn’t just look at the problem of age difference because we’re used to that now, it’s not shocking any more,” she told What’s On TV in 2012.
“This is a really fresh story about a romantic and aspirational woman who falls in love with a younger man yet has all the complications of being married with two children.”
She added: “There is humour in the drama. It’s potentially a very sad story, but it’s told in a light way and there’s a lot of beauty in it.”
In more recent years, Callum has become known for his roles in films like One Night Only, Eternity and the Fantastic Beasts series, as well as the TV shows War & Peace and Masters Of The Air.
Following her work in Leaving, meanwhile, Helen went on to play Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders, as well as appearing in Penny Dreadful MotherFatherSon and Quiz.
She died in 2021, at the age of 52, following what her husband Damian Lewis described as a “heroic battle with cancer”.
