Descartes strengthens European footprint with strategic hires and promotions

Descartes Underwriting, specialist in corporate parametric re/insurance solutions for climate and emerging risks, has expanded the responsibilities of commercial director Juan Maria Marqués Domenech to include the Central European region in addition to Iberia.

To further strengthen the company’s presence in Europe, Descartes has also appointed Felix Dalheimer as business developer for Germany and Austria.

Dahlheimer brings extensive experience to Descartes, having served as underwriter for Chubb’s German risks.

His career also included technical positions at R+V Re Disaster Analysis in Wiesbaden, where he developed deep expertise in natural disaster risks and their financial consequences.

This combination of technical precision and market insight will support Descartes in accelerating its growth and strengthening relationships with clients and brokers in the highly complex German and Austrian insurance markets.

Dalheimer will report to Marqués Domenech, senior leader of the EMEA organization, which will be overseen by Blanca Berruguete, head of distribution and account management, EMEA.

Commenting on the appointment, Marquis Domenech said: “I am delighted to join forces with Felix to strengthen Descartes’ presence in Germany and Austria and support our partner brokers and clients.

“Felix has a deep understanding of local markets and a strong technical background aligned with Descartes’ data-driven approach. Combined with his genuine passion for our mission to mitigate the impacts of climate risk, these strengths position him to deliver valuable solutions across the region.”

“I’m excited to take on this new challenge,” said Dahlheimer. “Despite rapid advances in the field of climate analytics, most underwriting and insurance products are still struggling to keep up. Descartes is at the forefront of developing innovative structures that are grounded in a rigorous, scientific understanding of risk—they are way ahead of the curve.”
