Coterie Insurance, a technology-enabled, data-driven general agent (MGA) specializing in property and casualty (P&C) commercial insurance for small businesses, has appointed Brett Saternus, FCAS, as its new chief underwriting officer (CUO).
Saternus has over 15 years of underwriting and insurance leadership experience across specialty insurers, insurtech MGAs and commercial insurers.
During his career, he held senior underwriting leadership positions at Canopius US Insurance, Rainbow MGA and Rhino.
In his new role at Coterie Insurance, Saternus will oversee underwriting strategy, portfolio management and capacity adjustments, supporting the company’s efforts to drive profitable growth and further enhance its underwriting capabilities as it expands its small commercial platform.
The company said Saternus’ appointment reflects its continued investment in senior leadership, combining deep insurance expertise with advanced technology execution.
Coterie added: “His arrival strengthens the company’s executive team as Coterie continues to build a modern, agent-friendly small business insurance platform built on data, underwriting discipline and operational rigor.”
David McFarland, founder and CEO of Coterie Insurance, commented: “Underwriting discipline is the foundation of how Coterie creates value for agents, carriers and small business owners.
“Brett brings a rare combination of actuarial depth, plan coverage experience and operator judgment that are critical in small business insurance.
“He has built teams, managed capacity, worked across carrier and reinsurer relationships and translated data into clear underwriting decisions. His leadership will help us scale with focus, clarity and long-term profitability.”
Saternus added: “Coterie has built a model for small commercial insurance that applies data, technology and underwriting discipline to agents and small businesses.
“I’m excited to join a team focused on making underwriting more precise, transparent and scalable, while helping partners grow profitably and deliver underwriting quickly and with confidence.”
