Andy Burnham fell over while playing cricket at a Commonwealth summit.

The prime minister took a tumble as he tried to run between the wickets at a ground in Antigua.

Wearing an England cricket top, black jeans and trainers, Burnham faced a delivery from a local player and managed to hit the ball before setting off for a run.

But after deciding he was not going to make it to the other end of the wicket in time, he tried to turn back.

However, he lost his footing and ended up lying on the ground – to the amusement of laughing onlookers.

When he eventually did make it back to his mark, an official Downing Street videographer ran over to put his microphone, which had fallen off when he fell, back into place.

Burnham said his “running between the wickets needs to improve”.

“It’s been a while since I played, you can tell, right,” the PM added.

While at the two-day summit, Burnham will hold talks with other Commonwealth leaders about whether Britain should apologise for its role in the slave trade.

Writing in The Guardian ahead of his trip, he said: “We are offering a structured dialogue with those affected by the transatlantic slave trade.

“Listening to calls for a formal apology on behalf of the British state will form an important part of this process and I am open to them.”
