The supernatural Canadian drama Below has become an unexpected hit for Netflix.

Below follows a fisherman, played by Josh Hartnett, who fights to protect his family from a mysterious, sea-bound force that terrorises his tight-knit community.

After debuting on the platform last month, the spooky thriller broke records, becoming the most-watched Netflix Canada project ever and immediately surging to the top of the streamer’s charts here in the UK.

While the show was always billed as a one-off miniseries, its popularity has left many fans wondering if we’ll ever return to Snook’s Arm in Newfoundland for a potential season two.

During an interview with Variety published last week, Josh was asked if he had any thoughts about a possible season two, admitting: “This is going to sound like bullshit, but it’s true: I haven’t thought about it at all because it was supposed to be a standalone entirely.”

The Verity actor explained: “It would be interesting to take Wade [his character’s son, played by Charlie Heaton] and Calvin out of the context of their home. This is just me thinking about it now and having sort of intuited that you might ask something like this and thinking about it just a little bit earlier today.”

Even if the series is a one-and-done, Josh is just happy it has received such a positive reaction from audiences.

“I do love the characters and I love this world, so never say never,” he concluded, adding: “But this is a limited series, and that’s the ending.”

“Even though it’s something of a happy ending for Calvin… it’s not a happy ending overall because there are still these huge issues facing us,” Jesse noted, before adding that “thematically, the story isn’t over.”

Josh agreed with the writer, saying he would “love to go play Calvin again,” and “the door’s not closed,” despite Below being intended as a “limited series”.

All six episodes of Below are now streaming on Netflix.
