Who Is Dave Canales? Get to Know the Panthers Head Coach

Podcaster Charlotte Wilder Calls Out Hypocritical Aaron Rodgers

Dave Canales spent two decades working his way through the ranks before being named head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2024.

Canales led the Panthers to the NFC South title and a playoff berth in 2025, the second season of his six-year contract. Ahead of year three, Canales expressed optimism that his squad would continue their upward momentum.

“We’re a fun team to watch,” Canales told reporters in May 2026. “Last year, [there were] a couple of games that no one really gave us a shot at, and we were able to play competitive football and win some of those.”

Despite finishing with just an 8-9 record in a middling NFC South last year, Canales defended the Panthers’ schedule featuring three primetime games in 2026 after having zero the year before.

Charlotte Wilder, cohost of the “Sports Gossip Podcast,” called out Aaron Rodgers as the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback continues to court controversy. “This is, once again, the Aaron Rodgers playbook of saying, ‘How dare you care or interfere with or be curious about my personal life,’ and then telling you little breadcrumbs about his personal life […]

“For me as a head coach, I just get excited about the primetime games because as we all know, as we get playoff opportunities, these are night games sometimes,” he said in May. “Sometimes they’re just standalone games, the way they stagger them. It helps us to be able to practice and be able to play in different environments: to play at night, in odd windows, sometimes it’s a Saturday game.”

He added, “All that just prepares you for the postseason. And for those opportunities. I’m excited to have that and play some excellent teams that we respect.”

Dave Canales Started His Coaching Career at His High School Alma Mater

Canales began his coaching career at his alma mater, Carson High School in Carson, California, working as offensive coordinator from 2004 to 2005.

“The emotions, camaraderie and physicality – all combined – had me hooked from the beginning,” Canales recalled to Buccaneers.com in November 2023. “I wanted to give back and train athletes, especially football players. I wanted to give them the training that I did not have at my disposal early on.”

After two seasons of high school coaching, Canales was hired as the special teams and tight ends coach at El Camino College, a community college in El Camino, California.

In 2010, Canales followed former USC head coach Pete Carroll to the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, where he worked for 13 seasons, winning a Super Bowl as a member of the team’s coaching staff in 2014.

Canales spent one season as quarterbacks coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023 before accepting the head coaching position in Carolina.

Dave Canales’ Family Has Deep Religious Roots

“My grandparents were church planters and missionaries to Mexi-Cali [the Mexican side of California border],” Canales told Buccaneers.com in November 2023. “They would travel, my grandpa would preach, and my grandma would sing. They served families and spread the love of Jesus through meeting simple needs, whether food, water, clothes or shelter.”

Canales said his grandparents “instilled faith in Jesus through hard times.”

“My grandpa found pride in all types of work,” Canales explained. “He always said, ‘All work is noble.’ There is no job too little or too great. They gave me the ability to take on menial tasks as well as big responsibilities with the same respect to the job at hand. I could sense that he was right based on the people I grew up around. They found pride in having a job, any job.”

He continued, “It is a point of pride in my heritage that as Mexican-Americans, whatever our hands find to do, do it with pride and do it to the best of your ability.”

“She worked three jobs at times and she told me the hard truths and when I had problems with players or coaches, she said, ‘You know what you need to do, you need to sit down and have those conversations’ and she’s been everything to me,” he gushed during a press conference.

Dave added, “This is our journey, this is our dream and we’ve been so excited and prepared for this opportunity. So, thank you and I love you babe.”

Dave Canales Made Shocking Admissions About His Marriage in Book

In 2022, Dave and Lizzy wrote and published a book together, “This Marriage? The Question That Changed Everything,” in which Dave made multiple shocking admissions about their relationship.

“I would be out with my friends and take my ring off, acting like I was single depending on who was around,” Dave said. “This didn’t happen all the time, but I left a crack in the door for deceit.”

Dave admitted to living “a secret life” amid a long history of infidelity.

“I cheated on Lizzy for the first time at my bachelor party one month before we got married,” he wrote. “From the start of our relationship, I was binge drinking and going out with my friends, without Lizzy. Before I was ever unfaithful to her, I was already there in my mind. Bad habits combined with addiction made it hard for me to resist temptation.”

When Dave eventually confessed to Lizzy, she had one question for him.

“I have something hard to ask you,” she recalled in the book. “Was any of your sexual activity unprotected?”

Dave answered, “Yes. Lizzy, I am so sorry.”

Elsewhere in the book, Dave admitted to having a drinking problem being addicted to pornography.

“It was like a gateway drug for me, creating pathways in my brain that allowed me to use sex coldly for my own benefit,” he wrote.

The couple decided to write the book in the hopes of helping other relationships going through dark times.

“We had to really think about how exposed we would be as a couple who already existed in a very public profession,” Dave wrote in the book’s preface. “Sharing our scars meant being willing to tell people the truth of how our marriage failed.”
