HIVE Underwriters, an independent specialist managing general agent (MGA), has expanded into specialist marine insurance with the appointment of Nick Lewis as Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), Marine Insurance, effective July 2026.

The launch of Marine marks the next stage in HIVE’s development as a multi-line specialist MGA.

Under Lewis’ leadership, HIVE will develop a diverse maritime offering with a focus on specialized niche areas where underwriting expertise, data-driven decision-making and strong broker alliances can deliver sustainable results.

Bruce Carman, CEO of HIVE Underwriters, said: “Marine insurance is a natural next step for HIVE, not because we pursue diversity, but because we see a real opportunity to build something unique in a category that continues to reward expertise and discipline. Marine insurance also has personal meaning to me; I spent the first decade of my career learning about and underwriting maritime accounts, so I have seen first-hand how important strong underwriting fundamentals and expertise are to delivering long-term performance.

“Nick is an outstanding underwriter and leader with the ability to excel in the market. His appointment reflects our strategy of backing outstanding talent and providing them with the platform, autonomy and support to build high-quality, sustainable portfolios. As in the aviation and aerospace sector, our focus is on attracting top underwriting teams who want to do their best, supported by strong data, consistent capabilities and an entrepreneurial culture. This is how we continue to grow HIVE.”

Lewis added: “Maritime remains one of the most technically demanding categories in the specialist market and this is where the opportunity lies. HIVE Offers the freedom to build a maritime proposition the right way, with clear requirements, consistent capabilities and the tools to support smart risk selection. Being part of a growing, diverse yet highly focused specialty platform, underpinned by expert underwriters and disciplined risk selection, is very attractive. My focus is on building a team of professionals that understand where and how the maritime portfolio can truly outperform and build the business to deliver reliable results for brokers and carriers over the long term.”
