HIVE Underwriters, an independent specialist managing general agent (MGA), is strengthening its new maritime specialist underwriting team with two new appointments: Alistair Marriott as head of marine and Jared Short as head of transport and logistics.
Both appointments will be effective upon completion of contractual obligations with their respective current employers in July 2026.
Marriott joins HIVE from Everest Insurance, where she served as deputy director of marine and director of international freight.
The executive is considered a highly regarded market leader. He has extensive experience building and leading international ocean and freight teams, underwriting complex global portfolios and delivering disciplined long-term performance.
Marriott commented: “HIVE’s approach to the ship business is clearly distinctive; it is about building the business right with the right people and resources, clear underwriting parameters and a strong focus on long-term performance.
“The opportunity to work with the talented team at an independent, entrepreneurial MGA to help shape the ocean platform from the ground up is very attractive.”
Short joins HIVE from Markel International where he served as senior underwriter for logistics, ports and terminals.
The executive focuses on transportation and logistics risks and has a proven track record of leading underwriting teams and managing specialized, liability-driven portfolios in areas such as logistics, port and terminal liability and property, warehousekeeper liability, container lessor and operator risk, and shipper interest risk.
“Transportation and logistics is a specialty category that rewards deep technical understanding and disciplined underwriting. HIVE’s commitment to practitioner-led underwriting and willingness to invest in experienced teams creates a strong platform to build portfolios that deliver consistent, sustainable returns. I’m excited to be a part of this journey,” said Short.
Marriott and Short will be joined by Nick Lewis, who will join as Marine CUO in July 2026 to lead the buildout of HIVE’s practitioner-led specialist marine underwriting business.
Bruce Carman, CEO of HIVE Underwriters, said: “From the outset, our aim in the maritime sector has been to build the business around outstanding senior practitioners who have the experience, judgment and leadership to build meaningful and sustainable products. Alistair and Jared are both well-known and widely respected in the market, with a strong reputation built on technical excellence and underwriting discipline.
“Alistair and Jared have also worked together in previous roles and have a clear understanding of what it takes to successfully build, lead and grow a maritime portfolio. We are extremely proud to have attracted such talented people and offered them the opportunity to build the maritime business at HIVE with real autonomy, consistent capabilities and a long-term knowledge-led underwriting mindset.”
HIVE’s ocean platform will build on the success of its established aerospace and recently launched space platforms, leveraging strong data, consistent capabilities and close broker partnerships to focus on niche market segments.
