AXA XL’s McGovern succeeds Brooks as Chair of Lloyd’s Market Association

Sean McGovern, currently head of AXA XL’s insurance business in the UK and Lloyd’s markets, has become the new chairman of the Lloyd’s Markets Association (LMA) for a three-year term, succeeding outgoing chairman Andrew Brooks.

McGovern serves as chief executive of UK & Lloyd’s and a director of its managing agent, AXA XL Underwriting Agencies Ltd. He is also a member of the Lloyd’s Council, a trustee of the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund and was chairman of the London Market Group.

The executive joined XL Group in 2016 as chief compliance officer, head of regulatory and government affairs and was later appointed general counsel.

Prior to that, he spent two decades at Lloyd’s of London in leadership roles including chief risk officer and general counsel, and served as a member of Lloyd’s of London’s Franchise Committee from 2014 to 2016.

Brooks is leaving the position after two terms. Commenting on his departure, Sheila Cameron, chief executive of the Lloyd’s Market Association, said: “I am extremely grateful to Andrew Brooks for his unprecedented two terms as our chairman, helping us get through the challenging years of Covid and into the current era of stable profitability for Lloyd’s and its members. Andrew’s support and enthusiasm for the LMA and our markets have been vital to me personally and to the LMA as a whole.

Regarding Brooks’ appointment, Cameron said: “I am now looking forward to working with Sean McGovern as our new chairman. He brings such a wealth of relevant experience to the role which will be of huge benefit to our members and the Board as we embark on a new year and a new five years. Sean is a highly respected market leader with a passion for Lloyd’s and the Lloyd’s market and a commitment to making them the best they can be.”
