Xbox Game Pass members will soon be able to enjoy demos of the upcoming game, which the Microsoft-owned gaming giant is calling Project Moorcroft. This is the first time we’ve heard of this program on Xbox. No games have been named yet. The Xbox team says Project Moorcroft will begin rolling out “within the next year.” Initially, it will focus on developers, aiming to them “more access to data and build excitement for their games.”

Microsoft also noted that developers will be “compensated” for these demos, and they’ll be able to see how their demos perform on Xbox Game Pass. That last bit sounds like Microsoft is trying to be the first to criticize Xbox Game Pass for not making money for anyone, including developers. (It’s still a great product for Xbox and PC gamers, though, and helps them save money based on how they use the service.)

While Microsoft was the first company to publicly announce plans to bring demos to its gaming subscription service, it’s not the only company trying to do so. In late April, a report said that Sony had requested a two-hour trial of all upcoming games — priced at over $34 (about Rs 2,600) — in support of its enhanced and improved PlayStation Plus offering. But unlike Microsoft, Sony reportedly didn’t offer “any additional perks,” suggesting that developers won’t be compensated for the demo.

“As we create different options for around how they to monetize, we them more creative freedom at the same time. We think we play a key in that, so the more we drive innovation, take advantage of this That kind of innovation results in cooler, more innovative games,” said Sarah Bond, Xbox corporate vice president of game creator experience and ecosystem, in a prepared statement.

“It’s really about three things when we think about how to invest to enable these game to be successful,” Bond added. “It’s about the player community, […] invest in development tools, [… and] Business models and business model innovations – providing them with multiple pathways and options to achieve economic and financial success. “

Microsoft revealed Project Moorcroft in an Xbox Wire blog post on Wednesday. The first Xbox Game Pass demo is expected “in the next year.” Meanwhile, the new PS Plus has started rolling out globally, arriving in India on June 22. But there’s no confirmation of a PS Plus demo, let alone an expected time for the first demo.
