Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and RuPay will soon be accepted in France, as NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) announced on Thursday that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French payment services company Lyra Network. NPCI has partnered with companies such as Discover Financial Services (DFS) in the US, Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA), Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) and Electronic Transfer Network in Singapore (NETS) to expand UPI and RuPay outside India.

“Considering that India conducts 5.5 billion UPI transactions per month, this strategic partnership is sure to be a game-changer for the digital payments ecosystem,” IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the announcement.

The minister also said that this partnership will be a step towards providing UPI to the world.

The Board of Directors of NPCI and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) established NIPL in April 2020 as a subsidiary of NPCI to expand the of UPI and RuPay solutions abroad. Since then, the global entity has partnered with different organizations, payment networks and banks in different countries to develop NPCI’s digital payment products.

Last July, NIPL partnered with the RMA, the central bank of Bhutan, to enable QR-based UPI transactions in the country. This is NIPL’s expansion in the Bhutan as it accepts and issues RuPay earlier.

The launch is expected to benefit more than 200,000 Indian tourists who travel to Bhutan annually.

In February, NIPL also partnered with payment gateway Gateway Payments Service and fintech firm Manam Infotech to enable UPI-based payments in Nepal.

In addition to expanding RuPay and UPI in global markets through NIPL, the central government is taking steps to expand NPCI’s payment services in India itself.

In April, NPCI approved WhatsApp to expand its UPI-based payment capabilities to 100 million users. It also brings UPI Lite service to allow small transactions in offline mode. Likewise, it launched the “123Pay” UPI service to bring UPI to feature phone users.

The RBI also recently allowed the RuPay credit card to be linked with UPI to help facilitate the use of both payment in the country.
