Telegram has become the latest app with more than 1 billion installs in the Google Play store. The sudden increase in downloads may be attributed to the major outages on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram earlier this month. Telegram, founded by Pavel Durov, is slowly increasing its market share and gaining more users due to power outages of competitors in this field. Due to a configuration change on October 4, all Facebook-owned applications were inaccessible for a few hours, which prompted many users to switch to Telegram.

The install counter shows that the Telegram app has now reached 1 billion downloads on Google Play. It was first discovered by Android Police. Earlier, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov stated that the app gained more than 70 million new users during the Facebook outage on October 4. Platform,” Durov wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to Sensor Tower’s data, in August, Telegram’s global downloads exceeded the 1 billion milestone. Other apps on the list include WhatsApp as well as Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify and Netflix. Sensor Tower data also shows that India has become Telegram’s largest Internet market, with approximately 22% of its life cycle installations. After India, Russia and Indonesia are the two main markets for the application, accounting for 10% and 8% of its total installations, respectively. Sensor Tower said that Telegram installations also surged 214.7 million times in the first half of 2021. This means a year-on-year increase of 61% from the 133 million reported in the same period in 2020.
