The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 180 points or 0.34% to end at 52,974, while the broader NSE Nifty gained 60 points or 0.38% to end at 15,842. Sensex traded around 796 points in today’s session.
Small and midcap stocks were strong, with the Nifty Midcap 100 up 1.25% and small caps surging 1.12%.
Ten of the 15 industry indicators compiled by the National Stock Exchange are green-settled. Sub-indices of Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Auto and Nifty Financial Services rose 2.91%, 2.27% and 1.32% respectively, outperforming the index.
In terms of specific stocks, Eicher Motors was the top gainer with shares soaring 7.95% to Rs 2,626. Apollo Hospitals, UPL, NTPC and SBI were also among the gainers.
Overall market breadth was positive, with 2,236 shares up, while the BSE lost 1,159 shares.
Among the 30-share BSE index, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Maruti, SBI, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, M&M, IndusInd Bank and L&T were the top gainers.
Ambuja Cements and ACC also rose after conglomerate Adani Group said it would acquire Holcim AG’s controlling stake in the companies.
In contrast, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, ITC, TCS, Dr Reddy’s, HCL Tech, Nestlé India, Infosys and Tech Mahindra ended in losses.
