Americans are anxiously awaiting whether they will accept the second round of stimulus checks, because many people suffer from the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin (Steven Mnuchin) made a new proposal for immediate relief assistance, and Nancy Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi) has been working with Mitch McConnell Joe Biden (Joe Biden), Kamala Harris (Kamala Harris) and Chuck Schumer (Chuck Schumer) discuss the stimulus plan.
New stimulation plan and the status of the second stimulation check
Last week, members of the US Congress have been actively discussing stimulus packages to help Americans cope with the economic crisis triggered by the coronavirus. Many important Covid-19 economic relief plans will expire at the end of this year.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi) continued to push for her revised $2.2 trillion “Heroes Act”, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Mitch McConnell) proposed a 500 billion dollar for specific needs The dollar stimulus bill. Pelosi’s stimulus package provided Americans with a second round of stimulus checks, while McConnell’s stimulus bill did not.
On Friday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows met with Republican members of Congress to discuss support for stimulus measures. “We will come up with a plan to sit down with Pelosi and Schumer and try to formulate targeted bills for those who really need it. I hope the Democratic Party can cooperate with us.” Mnuchin said.
Before the presidential election, Mnuchin met with Pelosi almost every day to discuss stimulus terms, but the two countries have not yet reached an agreement. The Secretary of the Treasury said in an interview on Thursday that members of Congress should reallocate unused stimulus funds, including funds he withdrew from the Federal Reserve to support the economy, and elaborated:
I hope that Congress will seriously consider the reallocation of the $580 billion that has been allocated. This will not cost taxpayers a penny.
McConnell supports Mnuchin’s proposal. He issued a statement on Friday confirming that Mnuchin’s actions “fully conformed to the provisions of the law and the intentions of Congress.” He emphasized that the money should be re-used “in response to the urgent, important, and effective actions Republicans have been trying to pass for months Targeted relief measures, but Democrats have repeatedly asked for total or total rejection.”
Pelosi is in stimulating negotiations with McConnell and Republican leaders on Thursday, but no agreement has been reached on any coronavirus rescue package. She said: “That didn’t happen, but hope it will happen.”
In addition, President-elect Biden has held the first face-to-face meeting with Pelosi, Senate Democratic leader Schumer and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris last Friday’s presidential election. Biden called on Congress to approve the next stimulus plan before taking office on January 20.
According to the results of the meeting released by the Biden team, the organization “agrees that Congress needs to pass the bipartisan emergency assistance plan at the duck-meeting meeting”, which is the period after election day but before the adjournment of this year. The statement added, “The package should include resources to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, relief for working families and small businesses, support for state and local governments trying to keep frontline workers at wage levels, expanded unemployment insurance, and Affordable medical care for residents of millions of families.”
Biden has previously expressed support for Pelosi’s “Heroes Act”, which includes the second round of direct payments to individuals. He said last week:
For now, Congress should get together and pass a Covid relief package like the Hero Act passed by the House of Representatives six months ago.
Biden’s transitional assistant Jen Psaki said that Biden, Pelosi and Schumer had already begun cooperation on Covid-19 relief before Friday’s meeting. She said: “They agreed that emergency assistance and assistance are needed during the la duck meeting to help families and small businesses.” She added: “There is no room for delay, we need to move forward as soon as possible.”
At the same time, Senator Bernie Sanders once again called for a large-scale coronavirus response. He posted a tweet on Saturday:
The American people cannot afford to wait. Each working-class American needs $2,000 per month. Every unemployed American needs $600 a week.
He added: “Every American needs health care as a human right. In America, no one should be hungry or homeless. The inactive Senate must act.”
