Renew Risk appoints Joshua Macabuag as Chief Executive Officer

Renew Risk, a provider of specialist analytics focused on risks affecting renewable energy assets, has appointed Joshua Macabuag OBE FREng as its new chief executive.

The company develops catastrophe risk models and data tools designed to support the insurance and energy sectors in assessing and managing risks associated with renewable infrastructure, including wind and solar projects.

Its platform is designed to improve understanding of natural and man-made hazards to help inform investment and underwriting decisions.

Macabuag is a co-founder of Renew Risk and previously served as chief product officer. He has been closely involved in the company’s development and strategic direction since its inception in 2021.

His background includes experience in catastrophe risk modeling and the insurance industry, with previous roles at major re/insurers, the World Bank and University College London.

In addition to his professional work, Macabuag also spent 14 years supporting international disaster response as an urban search and rescue volunteer engineer for SARAID. His services were recognized by an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2025.

The company said his appointment reflects its continued commitment to improving its analytical capabilities in renewable energy risk management.

“Renew Risk’s belief is that better analytics can accelerate the energy transition,” Macabuag added. “I am honored to lead the company into its next chapter as we expand our international portfolio of natural catastrophe risk models, deepen our partnerships in insurance and energy, and build confidence in the deployment of renewable energy around the world.”

The leadership change comes as Renew Risk prepares to roll out more natural disaster risk models, including new tools for solar farms in the United States and offshore wind developments along the UK and European coastlines.

These will build on the company’s existing US, European and Asian footprint, further strengthening its role as a global provider of risk analysis for renewable energy projects.
