Pixel 6a to Pixel Watch, I/O 2022 marks Google getting serious about hardware

Google held its I/O 2022 consumer keynote this week, showcasing its new hardware developments, including the Pixel 6a and Pixel Watch, and software innovations, including an “immersive” view on Google Maps. While the Pixel 6a has been confirmed for an India launch, the Silicon Valley giant has yet to provide any details about the India launch of the Pixel Watch and other products it showcased during its keynote. It also launched the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, as well as the Pixel tablet as its next-gen hardware that will debut at a later stage.

To talk about what’s going on at Google I/O 2022, Orbital host Akhil Arora spoke with Review Editor Roydon Cerejo and Executive Editor Jamshed Avari on this week’s Advertisement Shout podcast episode.

The Pixel 6a, which debuted at the I/O 2022 consumer keynote, is priced at $449 (~Rs. 34,700). The phone comes in three different colors, chalk, charcoal, and sage. It has a 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. While Google hasn’t revealed any details about the launch of the Pixel 6a in India, it did confirm that the phone will come to the Indian market later this year. It is expected to be available via Flipkart sometime by the end of July.

Google offers its custom Tensor SoC on the Pixel 6a — similar to last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The new phone also comes with a dedicated security co-processor called the Titan M1. It comes with dual rear cameras, including a 12-megapixel primary sensor. There’s also a 4,410mAh battery that supports fast charging.

The design of the Pixel 6a reminds us of the existing Pixel 6 series models.

In addition to the Pixel 6a, at I/O 2022, Google unveiled the Pixel Watch after years of anticipation and a flurry of rumors. The smartwatch features a round dome design and interchangeable wristbands. The Pixel Watch also integrates Fitbit for enhanced fitness tracking support. Thankfully, the Fitbit acquisition finally makes sense.

Google also announced the Pixel Buds Pro at the event as its next- true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds. The earbuds feature Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) support, making them different from existing Pixel Buds models. The I/O 2022 keynote did not provide details on the launch of the Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds Pro in India.

In addition to this, Google also showed off future hardware, showing off the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, as well as the Pixel tablet. The Pixel 7 series has been confirmed to debut with the Pixel Watch later this year. However, the Pixel tablet has been teased to arrive sometime in 2023.

Google also showed off its new “immersive” view on Google Maps, designed to provide users with a rich model of the world from their mobile devices. It will work on Android and iOS hardware and use Google Cloud to render the experience to lighten the load on the device.

The new products have initially started rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. However, there is no word on if or when we will get it in India. The track record on these functions is not good.

Google also announced the expansion of the language of its translation app to 24 other languages. These include more Indian languages of Assamese, Bhojpuri, Mizo and Sanskrit.

The event also gave us a glimpse into the next of Google Glass, which seems more natural than the original. Exact details on when we might see the new augmented reality (AR) glasses have yet to be announced, though.

We talked more about the upgrade to Google Glass, and how the Pixel 6a is doing in the Indian market. You can listen to all of this and more by hitting the play button on the Spotify player embedded above.
