According to company founder and group chief executive Ritesh Agarwal, more than 1 million people booked over half a million nights at hotel chain OYO for its New Year’s celebrations 2022, generating bookings worth around Rs 1.1 crore on its global platforms over the weekend . In a social media post, he said 58% of New Year’s Eve bookings were made on the same day, reflecting a trend since December 2017, which reflected “impulsive emotions and decisions” related to travel.
“Thank you to over a million people who booked over half a million nights with us this New Year. It’s been a busy New York (New Year) for everyone at OYO,” he wrote in a LinkedIn post.
He further stated, “2021 bookings are the highest of the 90 pandemic weekends since April 2020, with total bookings of (approximately) 1.1 billion rupees ($14.6 million) for our global customers on our platform over the weekend.” The New York weekend of Dec. 30-31, 2021, saw 503,000 bookings, compared with 102,000 in 2016, Garwal said.
Traveling has always been “an impulsive emotion and decision” for many people, he said, and OYO’s data proves that. The percentage of OYO bookings on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2021, was 58 percent, 61 percent in 2020, 57 percent in 2019, 63 percent in 2018, and 55 percent in 2017, he wrote.
Given the growth of technology-driven hotel chains, OYO has established a presence in more than 10,000 cities in 35 countries in 2021, with around 159,000 storefronts, Agarwal said. In 2015, it had 1,229 storefronts in 127 cities.
Referring to the new surge in COVID-19 cases, he said: “Let’s all prepare for what 2022 has in store for us. While 2020 and 2021 have been hit hard, we’ve seen that we’ll all be Take every opportunity to indulge yourself in the places we all love – traveling and exploring the world around us.”
