Nvidia limits the efficiency of ether mining using its GPU by 50% – Mining Bitcoin News

Nvidia announced that it will use the upcoming new graphics processing unit (GPU) series to limit the mining efficiency of Ethereum or any other cryptocurrency.

In a blog post published on February 19, the American hardware manufacturer stated that this restriction will first be implemented on the new Geforce RTX 3060 card that it plans to release on February 25.

Nvidia revealed that the new GPU software driver is designed to detect specific attributes of ETH mining algorithms and limit the hash rate or cryptocurrency mining efficiency to around 50%.

However, Itpro reports that the software does not limit the efficiency of all crypto mining activities, “The limiter will only be activated when the process uses Dagger Hashimoto or an algorithm similar to Ethash.”

The Nasdaq-listed company hopes that this restriction will prevent the purchase of game-oriented graphics cards for large-scale Ethereum mining operations. ETH is one of the few coins that can still be mined using graphics cards.

According to reports, due to the accumulation of ETH miners, manufacturing restrictions and supply chain issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the supply of GPUs mainly used for video game consoles is in short supply. As a result, prices soared.

Nvidia declared: “We have always been gamers.” “We are obsessed with new game features, new architectures, new games and technologies. We designed Geforce GPU for gamers, and gamers are eager to get more.”

However, Nvidia revealed that it is planning to produce GPUs specifically for Ethereum miners, the mine is called the Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP). It said that the new mining processor will be released in March and will not “do graphics” nor “meet Geforce GPU specifications, so it will not affect the usability of Geforce GPUs for gamers.”

The company stated that CMP “lack of display output, which can improve airflow during mining and make it more densely packed.” It explained that CMP also has a lower peak core voltage and frequency, which improves the power efficiency of mining.
