Insurance, reinsurance and investment holding company Markel Insurance has announced the appointment of Phil Jones as International Chief Information Officer (CIO), effective immediately.
In this role, Jones will lead technology strategy for Markel’s international operations. He will shape and deliver the company’s technology vision while ensuring the development of systems, data and digital capabilities are in sync with the company’s focus on operational excellence.
Jones will work closely with Markel Group Inc.’s international leadership, global security services and IT teams to prioritize strengthening the operational resiliency of the insurer’s international platform, improving service performance and supporting innovation.
Jones will also work to improve coordination between technology and business teams. The aim is to help the organization create greater value from data, modernize core technology infrastructure and support teams across Markel’s five regional businesses with high-performance systems.
His appointment reflects the company’s continued investment in leadership as it expands its capabilities and supports growth in global markets. Based in London, Jones will report to Markel International Chief Operating Officer Carys Lawton-Bryce.

Jones joins the company with extensive experience in chief information officer and senior technology leadership roles in specialty insurance, financial services and the public sector. Prior to that, he served as global chief information officer for Aspen Insurance, where he led IT strategy, cloud transformation initiatives, cyber defense initiatives and global technology teams to deliver improvements in performance, security and cost efficiencies.
Earlier in his career, Jones served as Executive Director of Service Delivery and Operations for the UK Ministry of Defence, overseeing mission-critical global IT services. He has also held senior technology leadership roles at Prudential plc, Lloyds Banking Group and Atos.
