Markel Insurance, the insurance business unit of Markel Group Inc., has appointed John Riley as senior claims adjuster for financial institutions, effective immediately.
His appointment supports the transition of remaining commercial directors and officers (D&O) claims to the expanded FIDO claims team, while also strengthening resources as Markel’s financial institution claims portfolio continues to grow.
This change is designed to provide a more efficient and consistent claims experience for brokers and clients.
In his new role, Riley will manage a variety of financial institutions and manage liability claims across the UK and internationally. He will ensure claims are processed in accordance with Markel’s Claims Value Proposition, which outlines the company’s commitment to delivering high standards of service to customers around the world.
Riley will work closely with managing agents and external service providers to support the delivery of claims management across multiple jurisdictions, guiding the entire process from initial notification to resolution.
He will also work with financial institutions and D&O underwriting teams to participate in policy wording discussions and help maintain risk transfer solutions that are tailored to clients. In addition, he will provide guidance and guidance to claims handlers within the team.
Based in London, Riley reports to Natalie Myhill, Financial Institutions and Fintech Claims Manager within Markel’s Professional and Financial Risk (PFR) Claims team, which is led by Jonathan Pestell, Head of PFR and Cyber Claims.
Riley has over 25 years’ experience managing financial institutions and D&O claims in the London market. During his career, he has handled complex matters across multiple jurisdictions, including the UK, US, South America, Europe and Israel, often involving cross-border investigations, shareholder rights and regulatory issues.
Most recently, he served as a senior adjuster for Starr Underwriting Agency. Prior to this, he worked at Aon UK as a referral point for financial insurance claims, focusing on D&O and contributing to a range of internal initiatives.
